BEAM Career Fair

Monday, September 16, 2024

Inn at VT, Latham Ballroom

10 AM* - 3 PM

*Student check in opens at 9:30 AM

While co-hosted by BEAM and BSE, with a focus primarily for students in Biomedical Engineering (BS, MS, PhD) and Biological Systems Engineering (BS, MS, PhD), all disciplines at Virginia Tech are welcome to attend. There will also be employers recruiting specifically Master and Doctoral candidates.

Please review the important information below to help you have a great fair.

  •  Copies of your updated resume (print two per every company you plan to talk to)
  • A pen to take notes
  • Hokie Passport

What not to bring: A backpack! We will have a designated backpack holding area, but students are strongly encouraged to not bring one to save yourself time and risk.

Business Professional attire is strongly recommended. Virginia Tech Career and Professional Development has the Career Outfitters Closet, which provides students with free, donated clothing appropriate for career fairs, networking opportunities, and interviews. Sessions are by appointment only.

Do Your Research

  • Find out which employers will attend the career fair via Handshake and learn more about their opportunities, mission, and culture.
  • Make a prioritized list of who you want to meet at the fair. Start the fair by meeting with the companies you are interested in but maybe aren't your top choice. This way, you are less nervous and have a bit more practice talking to employers before you meeting your top choices.

Wear Professional Attire

  • Industry appropriate attire will determine your first impression. Be sure your outfit is clean, pressed, professional, and fits properly.
  • Leave your backpack at home or in the bag check area as they are cumbersome and distracting.
  • If you need assistance finding attire, schedule an appointment with Career Outfitters, a free clothing resource for Virginia Tech Students.

Prepare Your Pitch

  • Highlight your current involvement, skills, previous relevant experiences, and your goals.
  • Tailor your elevator pitch to each employer by asking a specific question about their organization at the end of your pitch.
  • Utilize the 'Craft the Perfect Elevator Pitch' worksheet to help you get started.

Prepare Questions in Advance

  • Avoid asking "What does your company do?" It is expected you have done the research to learn something about the organization. Asking customized questions to each employer will not only help you stand out from the crowd, but will allow you to gather more information about the culture and opportunities of the company.
  • Don't forget to bring your questions for each employer to the fair.

Perfect Your Resume

  • Update your resume to reflect your current experiences and education.
  • Have your resume reviewed by Career and Professional Development.
  • Bring plenty of printed copies of your resume with you.
