Busting Lab
Offering a Broad Range of Testing Services
The Busting Lab, located in Norris Hall, is a multi-purpose laboratory for testing a broad range of material mechanical behaviors. Services are available for student and classroom use, other Virginia Tech departments, and outside companies and institutions.
Services and Equipment
The Busting Lab offers the mechanical testing services below:
- Tensile tests
- Compression tests
- Three-point and four-point flexural bending tests
- Charpy impact tests
- Hardness tests (Rockwell, Vickers, Brinell, and nanohardness)
- Fracture toughness tests
- Metallographic tests
The lab also offers three universal test frames with capacity of up to 150 kN (30,000 lbs.). Additionally, the Busting Lab encompasses facilities and equipment in Hancock Hall that can perform fatigue tests on a number of material types and geometries. Capacities there range up to 100 kN (20,000 lbs.).
