Memorial Lecture Series
Each year, BEAM hosts the Memorial Lecture Series in honor and recognition of the life and legacy of our former colleagues.
Hassan Aref Memorial Lecture
Dr. Aref was dean of the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech from 2003-2005. He served as professor in Engineering Science and Mechanics until 2011. He is known for having developed the concept of chaotic advection in fluid mechanics which has had worldwide impact.
Kevin P. Granata Memorial Lecture
Dr. Granata was a professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Virginia Tech from 2003-2007. He was passionate about his family and his work as an educator and researcher. He developed innovative methods to quantify low back stability that are considered cutting edge by the field. Leaders in the field of movement dynamics called him “among the top five biomechanics researchers in the country.”
Liviu Librescu Memorial Lecture
Dr. Librescu was a professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Virginia Tech from 1985-2007. He had a passion for his profession and his students and demonstrated courage throughout his 76 years of life. He has a record of accomplishments in the theory of shells and advanced composite materials, aeroelasticity, and hypersonic flow fields.
